Beattie rejoint le Squadron 153 comme W/O au début 1944 avec le F/S (plus tard W/O) John Dickinson comme Opérateur Radar. Beattie est promu officier en juin 1944, mais les deux hommes ne rentrent pas d'une mission Intrucdeur dans le secteur d'Istres dans la nuit du 9 au 10 juillet. Leur nom est commémoré au Mémorial de Malte. Dickinson qui avait été promu P/O n'était pas encore informé de cette nomination au moment de sa disparition.
