Roy Carr s'engage dans la RAF au cours de l'été 1940 et se qualifie comme officier pilote en juillet 1941 au terme de son entrainement. Il devient chasseur de nuit et sert tout d'abord avec le Squadron 29 à partir d'octobre 1941. Un an plus tard, il devient commandant adjoint du Flight B. En février 1944, il rejoint le Squadron 25 avec le grade de F/L et devient commandant du Flight B en 1945.
