John Cridland est promu officier au Squadron 501 en juillet 1938. En janvier 1940, il est de nouveau promu F/O. Après avoir combattu en France en mai, il rentre en Grande Bretagne le 13 juin et rejoint l'OTU 5 comme instructeur. Cinq jours plus tard, il est transféré à l'OTU 7. Il devient F/L en janvier 1941 et S/L en mars 1942. Il est W/C en Afrique du Nord lorsqu'il se tue le 31 mai 1943, vraisemblablement dans un accident, à l'âge de 32 ans. Il est inhumé au cimetière de Medjez el Bab, en Tunisie.
