Né le 25 juin 1942, John Lee s'engage dans la RCAF à Ottawa le 20 août 1940 et devient officier en même temps qu'il obtient ses ailes au SFTS 9, le 26 avril 1941. Resté au Canada en qualité d'instructeur au SFTS 2 et au FIS 1 jusqu'en septembre 1943, il rejoint la Grande Bretagne où il sert avec le Squadron 401 au cours de la période 1944 / 45. Remportant 2 victoires en combat aérien, il quitte la RCAF le 6 octobre 1945 après être rentré au Canada.
