Don Mc Donald est né au Canada le 23 août 1913 et s'engage comme officier dans la RCAF le 29 janvier 1940. Envoyé en Grande Bretagne en octobre 1942, il devient pilote Intruder au Squadron 418, prenant le commandement du Flight B en 1943 avant de prendre le commandement du Squadron tout entier le 8 janvier 1944. Il termine son tour d'opérations en février 1944 et reçoit la DFC dont l'annonce parait le 10 mars 1944 en récompense des deux victoires obtenues en compagnie du P/O S Wilson, son navigateur. Il reste dans la RCAF après guerre.

This officer has participated in a large number of sorties and throughout has displayed great skill, determination and devotion to duty. On a recent occasion Wing Commander Macdonald led a small formation of aircraft on a sortie during which seven enemy aircraft were shot down, two of which were destroyed by Wing Commander Macdonald. The success achieved on this brilliantly executed operation reflects the greatest credit on the efforts of this officer.
