Donald McLachlin est né le 12 décembre 1917 et s'engage dans la RCAF à Windsor, dans l'Ontario, le 19 août 1940. Il se qualifie comme pilote le 4 juillet 1941 et obtient une promotion au rang d'officier avant d'être envoyé en Grande Bretagne le mois suivant. Reprenant l'entrainement en qualité de futur pilote de chasse de nuit à l'OTU 60, il se trouve affecté au Squadron 125 en novembre 1941, sur Defiant. Brièvement attaché au Squadron 87, il retourne au Squadron 125 lorsque celui-ci est équipé de Beaufighter, passant par l'OTU 54 afin de se qualifier sur bimoteur. Après avoir effectué un premier tour d'opérations, il débute un second tour le 8 septembre 1944 comme F/L au sein du 1695(DT) Flight. Mentioned in Dispatches le 1 janvier 1945, il retourne finalement au Canada au début de 1945 et quitte le service 6 semaines plus tard.

Flight Lieutenant McLachlin completed a tour of operations on night fighters between November 1941 and November 1943, and was posted to No.1688 (B) Defence Training Flight at Newmarket. He was posted to No.1695 (B) Defence Training Flight on May 6th, 1944 and has been chiefly responsible for the organization of the night fighter affiliation flight. Since completing his operations, Flight Lieutenant McLachlin has carried out this comparatively unexciting and tiresome work with great energy and enthusiasm, with the result that night fighter affiliation has been introduced as a new and valuable part of Bomber Defence Training.
