John Gasson est membre des SAAF et rejoint le Squadron 92 en qualité de Sous-Lieutenant au début de l'été 1941. Promu Lieutenant au début de 1944 et Capitaine en avril, il prend le commandement du Squadron en octobre 1944 et conduit l'unité jusuq'en juillet 1945. Il reçoit une DFC en juin 1944 après avoir remporté 5 victoires et une Bar en juin 1945. Il reçoit aussi la DSO en mars 1945.
